A new restaurant and drinking venue called Morgan's Brasserie and Bar, which opened earlier this autumn, has been winning rave reviews.

Situated on Princess Street near the city centre, this modern venue offers light lunchtime snacks, as well as evening meals.

The fact that it is full most evenings is a good sign and it may be well worth a visit.

Assertiveness and Communication Skills Workshops

Plymouth College of Further Education are running a course on assertiveness and communication skills as part of their Essential Business Skills Workshops on Tuesday 14th February (Valentine's Day) 2006.

11a Cadogan Square at Drum Theatre

A new play written and directed by Bob Perkins - 11a Cadogan Square is showing at the Drum Theatre in Plymouth from 24th to 28th January 2006. It is presented by the Western College Players and shows at 2.45pm and 7.45pm. Disabled access is available.

3D Art Exhibition

Artist Cornelius Van Rijckesvorsel exhibits a range of painted screens and tactile, three-dimensional sculptures at the Stoke gallery in Plymouth from 28th January to 18th February 2006. The pieces are the sum of five years work and are titled "Quality of Time".

Cornelius, a Plymothian, was educated at Nice School of Art in France and has exhibited at the National Gallery in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Argyle beat Palace

Football / soccer in Devon UK - Plymouth Argyle beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at home on Saturday afternoon. Nick Chadwick opened the scoring within the first minute, finishing from a Micky Evans knock down. Evans himself then had an effort blocked by Fitz Hall before Andy Johnson hit the post for the Eagles.

The Pilgrams had the better of the first half, but were under pressure for much of the second. Deep in to injury time though, Tony Capaldi made the game safe for the Home Park side on 94 minutes, after good work from David Norris.

Swimming Pool Closure

Seaton Barracks Swimming Pool in Plymouth is to be closed in Spring 2006, despite the efforts of many campaigners to keep it open. The reason given is that the pool loses £160,000 each year. It also comes after the re-opening of the historical outdoor pool on Plymouth Hoe.

The government and local councils spend millions of pounds each year on promoting public health issues. So removal of facilities for people to exercise and improve their health comes as a surprise to many campaigners. Swimming can be the most appropriate form of exercise for many people, as it has little impact on joints and offers the chance for people with chronic problems, such as arthtitis and osteoporosis to improve their cardio-vascular fitness. This can reduce the risk of illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes and actually help to treat the conditions. Running is free of course, but many, particularly older people can not do so.
